Five Tips For Mowing Your Lawn Safely

Sometimes we take safety for granted when mowing our lawn because we do it so often. Here are tips to keep everyone safe while mowing this season.

“A careful walk-through of your yard before mowing can prevent accidents and protect your family, pets, and equipment.”

1) Do a walk-through
Check your lawn carefully before mowing. Winter and seasonal changes can uncover rocks, sticks, toys, or other objects that could become dangerous projectiles if left unchecked.

2) Clear the yard…of everything
Remove children, pets, and other obstacles from the mowing area. Even slow-moving mowers can fling debris. Talk to kids about mower safety so they know the rules and can stay safe.

3) Know your mower
Read the manual carefully. Check if your mower has a kill switch for riding mowers or push mowers. Ensure all safety features function properly. Consider renting a push mower or riding mower from your local rental center if you need extra power or efficiency.

4) Wear protective clothing
Eye protection is essential—wear goggles or safety glasses. Gloves, long pants, and sturdy shoes prevent injuries from flying debris or accidental contact with the mower blade.

“Proper protective gear and careful handling of your mower reduce the risk of injuries and make mowing a safe, enjoyable task.”

5) Keep your mower off the pavement
Mow on grass, not pavement, to prevent rocks and debris from being flung at high speeds. This protects windows, landscaping, and anyone nearby.

Using the right mower and safety equipment is key. Whether you rent a push mower, riding mower, or need safety gear like goggles, gloves, or ear protection, preparation and attention to detail will keep your lawn looking great without accidents.
